PVG is the Protecting Vulnerable Groups scheme, run by Disclosure Scotland. Anyone doing a regulated role with children is legally required to be a PVG scheme member.
How it works in Scottish youth football:
- Every member of staff or volunteer doing regulated work with children must be a PVG scheme member. Roles that are not regulated work need a Basic Disclosure instead.
- Youth football PVG applications go through the Grassroots Football PVG Body, which handles them for the Scottish Youth FA and other grassroots football bodies. Its Safeguarding Panel risk-assesses any information that comes back.
- People in regulated roles must complete a self-declaration form every year and get a PVG Scheme Record Update every three years.
- From 1 April 2026, new PVG memberships last five years and then need renewing. Existing members are being moved onto five-year membership in phases.
