From the SANESA Rules (2026), sections 2 to 4:
Who can ride:
- Primary schools: bona fide learners from pre-primary to Grade 7 at a school registered with its education department. Levels 1 to 7 are for Grade 0 to Grade 7; younger learners may ride Rising Stars classes only, from the year they turn 4.
- High schools: bona fide learners in Grade 8 to Grade 13, whatever their age.
- A learner may only ride for the school they attend. Riders with disabilities may enter all classes at own risk, declaring their disability when registering.
Registration:
- SANESA membership is through schools, which must be registered with their education department and with SANESA.
- Learners don't need to join a national discipline association, provincial body or breed society.
- All horses and ponies must be registered with SANESA and have a valid passport. From the 2025 season, only official South African passports are accepted.
- Registering the same horse under different names or passport numbers is a serious offence that can disqualify the rider or school for the season.
