Not in the youngest grades. Rookie Rugby is described as a non-contact game played with flag belts.
- U7 to U10: a tackle is one flag pulled. There are no rucks, mauls or scrums (a tap and pass restarts play), no kicking in open play and no fending or hand-offs.
- U11 and U12 (transition to contact): tackling is allowed below the waist (the ball cannot be ripped), with 1 v 1 contested rucks (no pick and go from support players), no mauls, 3 v 3 uncontested scrums (no push, and the opposing scrum-half does not challenge), and kicking from hand only.
