Under Ringette Canada's Children's Ringette Guidelines (2020-21):
- Scores and standings are not to be kept.
- Shot clocks are not to be used.
- Formal competition (tournaments or jamborees) is recommended to be optional. Formal league play and rankings are not advised. Organizers should match teams of like ability, and small-area games or scrimmages against other associations should focus on participation and skill development.
- Formal penalties should not be awarded. The coach or official chooses between a verbal reminder while play continues, stopping play for unintentional dangerous play with a verbal explanation, or (only after repeated warnings or when safety is at risk) having the player sit out a shift or more.
- Rule infractions are expected to be frequent while children learn. The response can be a verbal reminder, stopping play if safety is at risk (for example kicking or covering the ring), or stopping play and giving the other team a free pass.
- Officials are not required; coaches can act as referees.
