Appropriate footwear is compulsory in all events, and no athlete may wear football boots or cleats.
- Under 6 to Under 10 (the 6s to 10s age groups): no spike shoes.
- Under 11 and Under 12 (the 11s and 12s): spike shoes only in events run entirely in lanes, plus long jump, triple jump, high jump and javelin.
- Under 13 to Under 20 (the 13s to U20 age groups): spike shoes in all track events, laned or unlaned, except walks, plus long jump, triple jump, high jump and javelin.
- All spike shoes must have every hole filled with a complete set of spikes, with no more than two blanks or slugs. Spike shoes cannot be worn outside the Field of Play unless all spikes are suitably covered.
- Maximum spike length is 7mm for track and 9mm for long jump, triple jump, high jump and javelin on a synthetic surface, and 12mm for all of these on grass. The venue may set tighter limits and the organiser advises what is allowed.
