When there's no umpire on court, the players call their own lines (Regulation 29, LTA Competition Regulations 2026):
- Each player calls the balls on their own side of the net, honestly and to the best of their ability.
- "Out" and "fault" calls must be made promptly after the bounce and loudly enough for the opponent to hear.
- If in doubt, the ball is good: the opponent gets the benefit of the doubt.
- The server calls the score before each first serve.
- Foot faults can only be called by an official, not by the opponent.
Wrong calls: if a player calls a ball out and then realises it was good, the point is replayed, unless it was a clear winner, in which case they lose the point. After one wrong call in a match, any further wrong call loses the point.
If your child is unhappy with an opponent's calls or behaviour, they can call the Referee or court supervisor to the court. Parents and other spectators must not get involved or try to influence the decision.
