Sessions are built around fun games that teach the basics. Hockey Australia's 2025 Games Guide sets out an example 8-week program where each session is 45 to 60 minutes and runs roughly like this:
- Warm-up game (about 5 minutes): a tag-style energiser such as Scarecrow Tiggy.
- Skill introduction (about 5 minutes): the coach explains the week's learning intention and the skill.
- Games (about 30 minutes): three or four games practising the skill, such as Rob the Nest or Hocktopus.
- Wrap-up (about 5 minutes): children reflect and ask questions.
The weekly focus in the example program is: week 1 come and try, then dribbling, passing, receiving, stealing, attacking, defending, and finally game play. Hockey Australia stresses fun and learning rather than winning.
Each provider sets its own length and day, so check the session time in the Program Finder when you register. Programs can range from a one-off come-and-try session to a 12-week program.
