When the ball crosses a touchline, or hits the ceiling of an indoor pitch, play restarts with a kick-in instead of a throw-in. It goes to the opponents of the team that last touched the ball.
- The ball is placed stationary on the touchline where it left the pitch (for a ceiling hit, the nearest point on the touchline).
- Only the kicker may be off the pitch.
- All opponents must stand at least 5m away.
- The ball is in play when it is kicked and clearly moves.
- It must be taken within four seconds.
- A goal cannot be scored directly from a kick-in: if it enters the opponents' goal, a goal clearance is awarded; if it enters the kicker's own goal, a corner kick is awarded.
