An unlimited number of substitutions may be made, at any time, whether the ball is in play or not, except during a timeout.
- The player coming off leaves through their own team's substitution zone and does not need the referees' permission.
- The substitute enters only after that player has left, also through their own team's substitution zone, and the referees do not need to authorise it.
- The substitution is complete when the substitute fully enters the pitch after handing the bib to the player being replaced.
- Permission can be refused in some cases, for example if the substitute's equipment is not in order.
- In official competitions a maximum of nine substitutes may be used; competition rules say how many can be named. The names of all players and substitutes must be given to the referees before the match.
