The coach in charge must always risk assess the session and set a ratio that is reasonable, safe and effective. British Gymnastics recommends:
| Session | Recommended ratio |
|---|---|
| Pre-school, child on their own | 8 children per coach, plus 8 for each directly supervised assistant coach |
| Pre-school, parent or carer taking part | Up to 20 children per coach |
| Gymnastics classes | Normally no more than 16 gymnasts per coach, plus up to 8 more for each directly supervised, qualified assistant coach (e.g. 16 + 8 = 24) |
| Each piece of apparatus or station | Up to 8 gymnasts |
| Recreational trampolining | Normally no more than 16 per coach |
There should always be at least two responsible adults in the gym: one a qualified coach, and the other not one of the gymnasts. Ratios may need to be lower for disabled gymnasts, and one-to-one support may be needed.
