For parents and carers of children aged 5 to 10 starting Basketball Australia's Ford Aussie Hoops program in 2026. Covers ages, registering, participant packs, session length, what to bring, ball size, refunds, and moving on to club basketball.
Ford Aussie Hoops is Basketball Australia's entry-level basketball program for children aged 5 to 10. No prior basketball or sporting experience is required, and children can take part over a five year period.
Programs run at accredited local centres across Australia, all year round and typically in line with school terms.

Registration is online only. Find your nearest accredited centre with the Program Finder at https://registration.basketballconnect.com/finder?membershipType=%5B2%5D, then follow the prompts through registration and payment. Basketball Australia says this takes no longer than 5 minutes.
Each local centre sets its own price, and the price is shown in the Program Finder. Your child needs no previous basketball or sporting experience.
During registration you can choose to buy a participant pack. There are three options, and each includes a size 4 or 5 Spalding basketball, a personalised reversible singlet and a sticker sheet:
Packs are dispatched within 3 to 5 business days of the registration being submitted and should arrive within 7 to 10 business days (longer in remote areas). If you skip the pack, you can buy singlets, drink bottles, socks, bags and size 4 or 5 basketballs later from the Aussie Hoops online store.
Children are coached by accredited coaches in a program built around fundamental motor skills, teamwork and respect for others.

Refunds are processed through your local Aussie Hoops centre using the Aussie Hoops Refund Form. Under Basketball Australia's policy:

Aussie Hoops gradually makes activities more competitive until a child is ready to join a club and play in an age-based competition (for example Under 8s or Under 10s). There is no set age: a confident six year old may be ready before a less confident ten year old.
Basketball Australia's signs that a child is ready:
Shooting on a standard 10-foot ring is nice to have but not essential, because children build the strength to score on whatever ring size their competition uses. Emotional readiness matters too, and a child does not need to be a superstar, only have a good attitude and a willingness to learn.
Club competitions differ in timing, age groups, travel and uniform requirements. Use the Program Finder at https://registration.basketballconnect.com/finder?membershipType=%5B2%5D to locate your nearest centre.
