As a parent, what should I do in the first 24-48 hours after a suspected concussion?

The guidelines ask parents and carers to:
- Get full details of what happened.
- Get your child assessed within 24 hours by a healthcare professional on site, or through the NHS by calling 111.
- Don't leave your child alone for the first 24 hours.
- Watch for worsening signs and symptoms for at least 24-48 hours. Call 999 or go to A&E if any red flags appear (for example repeated vomiting, a severe or worsening headache, increasing confusion or drowsiness, or a seizure).
- Encourage rest and sleep as needed, and limit phone, computer and screen use for the first 24-48 hours.
- Tell their school and any other sports clubs about the suspected concussion.
- Support them through the graduated return to school and then sport.
Your child must not return to any sport, training or PE lessons within 24 hours. In that time they also should not ride a bicycle, and older teenagers should not drive.
