As a coach, what must I do after removing a player with a suspected concussion?
Rule- UK
- UK Concussion Guidelines
- Grassroots sport
- Non-elite sport
- All ages (primary school upwards)
- If in doubt, sit them out
- 2024
- Parents
- Coaches
The guidelines give coaches, teachers and volunteers these responsibilities:
- Don't let them back on. They must not return to that game or session, even if they say they feel fine.
- Keep them supervised. Watch the player yourself or ask a responsible adult to monitor them.
- Tell the parent or guardian if the player is under 18.
- Arrange a safe journey home, and for a responsible adult to supervise them for the next 24-48 hours.
- Record it. Make sure any injury report form is completed and kept by the club, school or organisation.
- Follow the graduated return to activity and sport, with initial rest and a return to school or work before training.
If a neck injury is suspected, the player should only be moved by healthcare professionals with the right training. If any red flags appear, call 999.
