"If in doubt, sit them out!" is the guiding principle of the AIS Concussion and Brain Health Position Statement 2024. In practice:
- Any athlete suspected of concussion is removed from play, with no return to sport on that day.
- Anyone who is "not quite themselves" after a forceful blow should be assumed to have a concussion and be removed from play.
- A player with any doubt about concussion must not return to sport until cleared by a medical practitioner.
- Coaches should not return the athlete to the game before they have seen a medical practitioner.
- Under-reporting is a problem, so coaches and parents need to recognise symptoms when no medical staff are present.
