Follow the concussion action plan in NFHS guidance (2023), which is consistent with CDC HEADS UP:
- Remove the athlete from play right away.
- Check for danger signs. If any are present, call 911 or get the athlete to the emergency department.
- Make sure a health care professional evaluates the athlete. Don't try to judge how serious it is yourself.
- Inform the parents/guardians about the possible concussion and give them concussion information.
- Don't let the athlete drive.
- Keep them out of play for the rest of that day, and until a health care professional gives clearance (in writing, under NFHS guidance).
Until they're evaluated, watch the athlete closely and don't leave them alone, because symptoms can develop over a few hours or longer.
