What are byes and leg byes?
Rule- Perth, WA
- Cricket
- MJCC Stage 1
- Year 4-5 boys
- Year 4-7 girls
- 2026/27
- Parent umpires
Both are runs the batters take without hitting the ball with the bat.
- Bye: the ball misses the bat and the batter's body, and the batters run (usually because the keeper missed it). Signal: one open hand raised above your head.
- Leg bye: the ball comes off the batter's body or pads (not the bat or the glove holding it), and the batters run. Signal: touch a raised knee with your hand.
If a bye or leg bye runs away to the boundary, give both signals, the bye or leg bye and the four, so the scorers record four byes or four leg byes rather than four to the batter.
