According to the WCL Spectator Guide:
- A match has two periods of three minutes each, with a 30-second interval between them. It can be won by fall, technical superiority or points.
- Fall: called when both shoulders of the defensive wrestler are instantaneously held in contact with the mat long enough for the referee to observe total control. The referee registers the fall, having first agreed with the judge or mat chairman, by blowing the whistle and striking the mat with the hand. A fall ends the match whatever the period or score.
- Technical superiority: the match stops when the points difference is more than ten in Freestyle or more than 8 in Greco-Roman, and the leader wins.
- Points: if the match runs the full time, the wrestler with the most technical points wins.
- Tie on points: the winner is decided by the highest value of takedowns and holds, then the fewest cautions, then the last technical point(s) scored.
Freestyle and Women's Wrestling allow grasping the legs, tripping, and using the legs actively; in Greco-Roman it is forbidden to grasp below the belt line, trip, or use the legs actively (2026 WCL Rulebook).
