Licensed competitions in the UK are held under the UK Athletics Rules for Competition, current edition 2026, in force from 1 April 2026. The rulebook combines the World Athletics Competition and Technical Rules with UKA supplements (numbered with an "S", such as TR16 S2) that add or vary rules for UK competition, including the youth age groups.
- The rules apply to athletes in the Under 14 age group and above. Under 12s and Under 10s compete under home country federation guidance instead.
- Competition providers must hold a licence: Level 2 competitions from UKA, and Level 1 competitions from the relevant home country federation (England Athletics, Scottish Athletics, Welsh Athletics or Athletics Northern Ireland). Level 1 meetings where performances don't need to be recognised need no licence.
- Advertising and programmes must state the meeting is held "Under UKA Rules".
- A licensed track and field competition may last no more than 8 hours (first scheduled event to scheduled finish of the last) unless a new team of officials is provided.
- The regulations for each competition decide which age groups and events apply.
The online version of the rulebook is kept up to date and may be revised between printed editions.
