Speed Skating Canada (SSC) says officiating careers often begin at the club level, and with the right skills and training officials can go on to represent Canada.
Levels: the program has five levels for referees and starters and three levels for all other officials. Each level needs a specific technical course, practical experience and competition time under senior officials, and satisfactory evaluations. You request an upgrade once you meet the Officials Pathway requirements; SSC reviews the request and certifies the new level.
Clinics:
- Levels 1 and 2: organized by provincial and territorial organizations.
- Level 3: organized by SSC, or by provincial and territorial organizations if there is enough regional interest.
- ISU International Level and ISU Level: organized jointly by the ISU and SSC.
Courses: Respect in Sport for Activity Leaders, Safe Sport Training (needs a free NCCP number from The Locker) and Making Head Way in Speed Skating (concussion awareness) are required at Level 3 or higher and recommended for all levels.
