| Action | NFHS ruling |
|---|---|
| Pressure on the throat or carotid artery | Illegal hold (7-1-5v) |
| Leg block ("cut-back"): leaving your feet and using a foot or leg to cut out an opponent's leg, including from rear standing | Illegal (7-1-5n, from 2025-26) |
| Advantage wrestler locking or overlapping hands, fingers or arms around the opponent's body (including with a leg in the clasp) | Technical violation (7-3-3, from 2025-26). Penalty points are added to any points earned. |
| Holding the heel to the buttocks of a broken-down defender for more than 5 seconds | Stalling (5-24-4b). The referee signals and counts out loud. |
Exceptions to locked hands: it isn't a violation if the opponent has all their weight on their feet, has been lifted off the mat, or is in near-fall criteria. Overlapping hands while bringing an opponent to the mat is a violation only if it lasts beyond reaction time.
Stop a potentially dangerous hold before it reaches a dangerous state.
