Match limits:
- No more than six matches in a day.
- No more than 10 matches in a two-day event.
- Byes don't count toward either limit and don't go on a wrestler's match record (clarified for 2026-27).
Byes in brackets (2026-27 update): when the number of wrestlers isn't a power of 2, byes equal the difference between the number of wrestlers and the next power of 2. NFHS rules now recognize byes after the first round, as used by tournament software, scramble events and round-robin pools. No quarter bracket, half bracket or pool may have more than one bye beyond its paired bracket or pool.
Dual meet weight order (Rule 1-2-2, since 2025-26):
- The starting weight class is set by random draw, or the meet runs lightest to heaviest.
- In multi-dual events, each later dual starts one weight class above the previous round's starting class.
- The optional draw takes place before weigh-ins, supervised by the referee or another authorized person.
