Under NFHS rules, any player who shows signs, symptoms or behaviors consistent with a concussion must be immediately removed from the game and can't return until cleared by an appropriate health-care professional.
Signs officials can spot (CDC HEADS UP): appearing dazed or confused, slower answers or reactions, clumsiness or unsteadiness, vomiting soon after the hit, and changes in mood or behavior. Loss of consciousness, seizures, slurred speech or increasing confusion are danger signs that need emergency care.
CDC's message for officials: "When in doubt, get them out." You don't diagnose; you get the player removed and let health-care professionals evaluate. The NFHS Suggested Guidelines for Management of Concussion in Sports appear in the rules book appendix.
