The NFHS approved four rule changes for 2027:
- Reporting (3-2-3r, new): the games committee may decide whether field event athletes report at the start of the event or the start of their flight.
- Throws warm-ups (6-2-8, new): in shot put and discus, warm-up attempts must be taken from inside the circle, facing the sector. Backward, over-the-head and similar attempts are banned, so officials keep a clear view of the landing area.
- Foreign substances (6-2-16b, new): no foreign substances on shoes or in the throwing circle. The section was also reorganized.
- Vertical jump warm-ups (6-8-6): you may give the 60-minute late-entry warm-up at a height change if the 60-minute mark has already passed or would fall during the height about to begin.
There are also editorial changes to 5-3-3 Note, 5-4-3 and 5-12-1e.
2027 points of emphasis: throws safety, athlete conduct, preventive officiating, and coaching responsibilities.
