What is preventive officiating?

Preventive officiating is a 2027 NFHS point of emphasis. Officials act early to stop an infraction before it happens, instead of waiting to penalize it ("gotcha officiating").
Examples:
- pointing out a uniform problem before the athlete competes
- explaining exchange zone positioning to relay runners before the race
- reminding athletes and coaches where the restricted areas are
The NFHS prefers preventive officiating. It doesn't change any rule: an infraction that still happens is penalized.
The 2027 points of emphasis also address athlete conduct. Spontaneous celebrations such as high fives, chest bumps, pointing skyward or cheering for competitors are not taunting.
