From the NFHS rules, the 2026 interpretations, and the 2026 and 2027 throws safety points of emphasis:
- Cage: inspect for holes, loose netting and other defects, and complete repairs before throwing begins. If a discus cage can't be made to meet the rules in time, the referee may declare the event not contested (Rules 3-4-5, 6-2-6).
- Safety zone: a flagged or roped zone outside the sector lines and beyond the farthest possible landing area. If management sets it up correctly before the event, the event may proceed.
- Warm-ups: not allowed unless supervised by an event official or coach, and only after the meet director has declared the venue open. Warn the athletes and coaches and stop it. A repeat means disqualification from further competition (6-2-6).
- New 2027 (6-2-8): in shot put and discus, warm-up attempts must be taken from inside the circle, facing the sector. Backward, over-the-head or similar attempts are banned.
- New 2027 (6-2-16b): no foreign substances on shoes or in the throwing circle.
- During the event: nobody turns their back to the throwing area, and implements are retrieved only on an official's signal.
