Under Rule 6-8-2 (clarified in 2025), when the number of entries calls for it, the games committee may:
- assign competitors to active flights ("five alive") of no fewer than five competitors, or
- run the event in continuing flights ("straight through").
Reporting (new 2027, Rule 3-2-3r): the games committee may decide whether athletes must report at the start of the event or the start of their flight.
Landing systems: check the mats before the meet for wear, rips and adequate cushioning, a level surface, secure alignment and padding. Recheck between attempts for shifting or dislodged padding. Padding is required on hard, unyielding surfaces raised above ground level (6-9-21, 2026). In the high jump, the plane of the crossbar must be at least 4 inches from the landing pad (6-9-22).
