Under Rule 6-8-6 (new 2026, revised 2027):
- A competitor who hasn't entered the competition within 60 minutes of its first attempt gets a warm-up of 1.5 minutes (high jump) or 2 minutes (pole vault).
- Warm-ups take place during a height change.
- 2027: if the 60-minute mark has already passed, or would occur during the height about to begin, you may give the warm-up at that height change.
2026 NFHS rulings:
- Correct: two vaulters enter at 14 feet, more than an hour after the first attempt. The judge removes the bar, sets the bungee, and gives each vaulter 2 minutes.
- Incorrect to grant: a coach asks for 90 seconds for a high jumper who has already cleared four heights in an event that started 49 minutes ago. The warm-up is only for athletes who haven't yet entered within the 60 minutes.
