New for 2027 (NFHS boys Rules 4-14, 4-15 and 6-5-2r and s), the 10-second count is eliminated.
The 20 seconds:
- When play restarts with a team in possession in its defensive half, or a team gains possession during a live ball anywhere on the field, it has 20 seconds to advance the ball (loose or in possession) across the center line.
- The team can play the ball anywhere on the field during those 20 seconds.
- Failing to get it across in time is a violation.
Over-and-back: once the 20 seconds have passed, the team must keep the ball in its offensive half. Exceptions:
- after a shot
- when the ball was last touched by an opponent
