The Officials Manual (based on CKC's Sprint Racing Discipline Competition Rules) describes the usual complement of technical officials as:
- Chief Official
- Chief Finish Line Judge
- Competition Manager
- Finish Line Judges
- Timer
- Scorekeeper
- Referees
- Turn Point Umpire (long distance races)
- Starter
- Boat Control
Support officials, integral to running the competition, are the Safety Officer, Competition Organizer, boat drivers, safety boat personnel, video operator, results management and Announcer.
On-land roles are the Chief Official, Chief Finish Line Judge, Competition Manager, Finish Line Judge, Timer and Boat Controller. On-water roles are the Starter, Referee and Turn Point Umpire.
CKC trains officials for two fundamental requirements at any level of competition: safety (paddlers must be protected from hazardous weather, water, boat traffic and mechanical failures, and safety outweighs all other aspects) and fairness (a competitive environment that is fair to all crews, with even-handed interpretation and application of the rules).
