Officiating starts at the local club level, often by volunteering at a competition and learning from experienced officials. Divisions and provinces run their own training, and CKC manages the National Officials Program (the ICF manages international certification, with CKC nominating officials).
Minimum requirements to become an official:
- Minimum 16 years of age.
- Canoe Kayak Canada membership in good standing: registered in the CKC database for Level 4 and 5, or with a recognized CKC division for Level 2 and 3; pay the Officials fee; sign the Officials agreement; submit your logbook from the previous season; and submit SafeSport screening (a Police Criminal Record Check plus a completed safe sport course from the Coaching Association of Canada or Respect in Sport).
- Willingness to complete the technical and professional development training for your level.
- Commitment to volunteer for a minimum of 2 days per year.
