The Canoe Kayak Canada Officials Program is a structured, progressive program with three working levels (the levels are numbered 1 to 4, but Level 1 applies only within a club so it is often combined with Level 2). The final accreditation, the fifth level, is issued through the International Canoe Federation (ICF). Divisions and provinces run their own training, with exams and evaluations at each stage.
To apply for national accreditation you need:
- Certified Level 3 (Divisional) accreditation.
- Demonstrated competence in MOST positions on land (Chief Finish Line Judge, Finish Line Judge, Timer, Boat Controller) and on water (Starter, Referee).
- Registration with CKC through the CKC database.
Application (to the National Officials Committee, via the CKC registration system):
- $50.00 application fee (put towards your next season's CKC Officials Membership Fee if successful).
- An officiating resume (positions, regattas, responsibilities as a regional official) and your goals and objectives.
- A recommendation from your Divisional Officials Coordinator.
- SafeSport screening through the CKC database (criminal record check, education, application and screening disclosure form).
Exam: successful applicants take a course and exam at that year's National Championships. Plan to arrive for the Coaches meeting and stay for the first three days of competition. The exam generally takes place on day 3. CKC cannot pay candidates' expenses.
Appointment: to be considered for a national event you must hold current national accreditation, have said in writing you are interested and available, and be in good standing with CKC.
