- Markers
Under the laws (42.1), when there is no umpire the marker controls the game in line with the Laws of the Sport of Bowls, and before play must check that:
- all bowls carry a clearly visible, valid World Bowls Stamp;
- the rink width is correct (law 49.1), by measuring it;
- the side-bank pegs or markers are at the correct distances (law 49.12), by measuring them.
Bowls SA's Markers Guide for Beginners adds:
- bring chalk, a suitable string measure (bullet, Terry or Club Hawk type), a watch with a second hand, props for bowls and jack, and a pen;
- collect the scorecard and find out who the duty umpire is and what to do in bad weather;
- introduce yourself to the players (and any flip-board operators) and write the names on the scoreboard in scorecard order;
- check each set of bowls has the same distinctive markings on both sides, and report any irregularity to the umpire;
- keep bags, scoreboards and mats back from the bank edge, no closer than the number plate and corner pegs;
- tell the players you will mark touchers as soon as they stop, and get both players' agreement to remove dead bowls as soon as they stop;
- dress as the laws and your club or district require.
Equipment limits: in Bowls SA National Singles events, markers may only use a box string measure, a bullet string measure and wedges (domestic regulation on law 54.9).
