National Lifeguard is recertified by successfully completing a National Lifeguard Recertification exam. Award holders may recertify at any time, regardless of the certification date of the original award. Candidates bring the Alert text, a whistle, barrier devices (gloves and pocket mask) and proof of a previous National Lifeguard certification.
The recertification exam evaluates only the items marked as recertification items (see the Pool and Waterfront fitness and skills questions). The Society's suggested examination time for up to 16 candidates is 4 to 8 hours for a recertification exam (3.5 to 4 hours for an original exam).
The Lifesaving Society exam fee applies to successful and unsuccessful candidates alike.
