Junior domestic competitions in WA change some rules for this age group so players can learn the game. The most common modifications are:
- No zone defence. Man-to-man only: every defender guards a player, not a space.
- Half-court defence in lower divisions: defenders drop back to their own half and can't press in the backcourt.
- No double teams. Two defenders can't trap the ball handler.
- Lowered rings (8 ft) and a closer free throw line in lower divisions. Top divisions often use full-height (10 ft) rings.
- 3, 5 and 8 second violations are often not called, or a player gets a warning first.
- Major travels and double dribbles are called; small footwork slips are often let go.
- Cross-court (backcourt) violations are often only called in top divisions.
- No scores on the scoreboard in lower divisions, and sometimes a mercy rule when one team is well ahead.
- Coaches stay at the bench during play.
These vary between associations and divisions. Before your first game, ask the court controller or referee coach which of them apply to the game you're refereeing.
