What do I need to know as a judge at Surfing South Africa contests for surfers of all ages? Judging criteria, the scoring scale, panels, interference calls, the Head Judge and Priority Judge, tabulation, tie-breaks and conduct.
SSA uses the ISA judging criteria (SSA Rulebook 2025, Section 3). The emphasis on each element depends on the location and conditions on the day, and changes in conditions during the day.
Shortboard: the surfer must perform radical, controlled major manoeuvres in the critical sections of the wave with speed, power and flow. Innovative and progressive surfing and the combination and variety of major manoeuvres are rewarded. Key elements:
Longboard: controlled manoeuvres with the highest degree of difficulty in the most critical section, using the whole board and wave in traditional longboard style. Nose riding and footwork (walking) are key, along with critical section, commitment and difficulty, speed and power, footwork and control, and variety. Longboards must be at least 9 feet long with a minimum aggregate width of 47 inches (widest point plus 12 inches from tail and nose).
Stand up paddle: as for shortboard, plus functional use of the paddle for leverage to create more radical moves.
Under the SSA Rulebook 2025:
| Score | Description |
|---|---|
| 0.1-1.9 | Poor |
| 2.0-3.9 | Fair |
| 4.0-5.9 | Average |
| 6.0-7.9 | Good |
| 8.0-10.0 | Excellent |
The same scale is used for shortboard, longboard and SUP. The commentator may not announce scores until all judges' scores are entered.

On paper tally sheets (Section 7):
Re-surfing ties (Section 4): only completely unbreakable ties that affect who advances are re-surfed. Before that, the tie is broken by:
If both tied surfers advance, the original team seed or previous-round scores break the tie. If both are eliminated, they share the place (for example equal third for a tie between third and fourth, or equal fourth if neither started) and the points for the places involved are averaged.
Under the SSA Rulebook 2025 (Section 3), the Contest Director and Head Judge apply these rules:
