Under Rule 66 of the NHA Rules of Racing:
- Straight after pulling up, ride your horse to the weighing-in place and present yourself to the clerk of the scales without touching anyone or anything except your own equipment (accidents excepted). If you or your horse is injured, you may walk or be carried to the scales under a stipendiary steward's supervision.
- You must weigh in within 0.5 kg under or 1 kg over your weighed-out weight. Fractions under 0.5 kg are ignored.
- Underweight by more than 0.5 kg: the clerk of the scales lodges an objection, and if upheld your horse is disqualified.
- Overweight by more than 1 kg: you are reported to the stewards, unless they accept exceptional accidental circumstances or replaced equipment.
- Not weighing in: your horse can be disqualified, and you face a suspension of at least 90 days (the inquiry board may suspend up to 60 of those days for a year if your horse was unplaced).
If the stewards accept you were incapacitated and the horse carried the correct weight, it is not disqualified for that reason. May 2026 penalty guidelines: failing to weigh in correctly R1 500; overweight R1 000.
