What pre-match checks must I make?
Rule- Western Australia
- WA Football
- Junior football
- Years 3-6
- Modified competitions
- AFL Laws of the Game
- 2026
- Umpires
Your role (section 24) includes ensuring teams follow the laws and policies, which includes pre-match checks of player boots, nails, protective equipment and jewellery.
- Jewellery: none allowed in matches; all piercings removed and not taped. Medical bracelets must be fully taped and marked "MEDIC". No plaster casts.
- Equipment: hats are not permitted; headgear must be soft, lightweight padding; shin guards, gloves, diabetic pumps and most braces need a League permit. No grip aids (tacky sprays, gels, resins). Years 3-6 may wear compression garments or non-compression t-shirts without a hood under the jumper, but no jumpers, jackets or hoodies.
- Team sheets: a completed team sheet (PlayHQ, with the paper copy) must be handed to you before the start. It lists players with jumper numbers and officials (coach, assistant coach, team manager, runner, First Aid / Medical Officer, goal umpire, interchange steward). Anyone not listed cannot take part; a person playing under another's name makes the match a forfeit.
- Ground and safety: goal and behind posts must be padded and a stretcher must be at the ground before a game may start.
- Numbers: both teams must have equal numbers on the ground.
