The 2026 WTA Rulebook allows off-court coaching during play, in a non-disruptive manner:
- Coaching is allowed only from the designated player/coach box.
- Brief verbal coaching is allowed only when the player is at the same end of the court as her box.
- Subtle non-verbal coaching (hand signals or gestures that do not hinder the opponent) is allowed at either end.
- A player may not approach her coach or hold a conversation with them during play, changeovers or set breaks, other than the permitted brief verbal coaching. She may approach her coach during an opponent's medical time-out or toilet/change of attire break, or another break approved by the chair umpire in which players stay on court.
- If coaching starts to interrupt play or hinder the opponent, the Supervisor warns the coach first; if it continues, the player may face coaching penalties and fines.
- Coaches may not speak to their players when the player leaves the court for any reason, except as permitted during a rain delay.
This applies to WTA tournaments. The men's ATP rules were not checked for this guide.
