Only an "Unsuccessful" Player Review counts towards the limit of three per innings.
- Successful (the on-field decision is reversed): does not count.
- Unsuccessful (the on-field decision is unchanged): counts. This includes an Out decision that stays Out but for a different mode of dismissal.
- Unchanged - Umpire's Call (an lbw decision unchanged solely because of Umpire's Call): does not count.
- No ball (a Not out decision stays because the delivery was a No ball, so no further evaluation is needed): does not count.
- Failure of technology: does not count towards the limit if the ICC Match Referee reinstates it.
- Player Review and Umpire Review from the same delivery where the third umpire's Umpire Review decision makes the Player Review unnecessary: the Player Review is disregarded and does not count.
The third umpire counts the Unsuccessful reviews and tells the on-field umpires once a team has used up its allowance for the innings. The scoreboard shows the number of Player Reviews each team has left in the innings in progress.
