The player makes a "T" sign with both forearms at head height. The total time between the ball becoming dead and the request must be no more than 15 seconds. The bowler's end umpire gives the player a prompt after 10 seconds if no request has been made, and the player must then request immediately. If the umpires believe the request was outside 15 seconds, they decline it.
- The captain may consult the bowler and other fielders, and the two batters may consult each other, before deciding.
- For lbw appeals, the captain or batters may ask the bowler's end umpire whether the decision was made on the basis that the striker made no genuine attempt to play the ball with the bat.
- No replays are shown on the big screen until the 15 seconds has elapsed.
- A request cannot be withdrawn once made.
