- Who: only the batter who was given out can review an Out decision, and only the fielding captain (or acting captain) can review a Not out.
- How: by making a "T" sign with both forearms at head height.
- Time limit: the request must be made within 15 seconds of the ball becoming dead. The bowler's end umpire gives a prompt at 10 seconds. A late request is declined.
- Who they can talk to: the captain may consult the bowler and fielders, and the two batters may consult each other. On an LBW they may ask the umpire whether the decision was based on the batter making no genuine attempt to play the ball. Nothing else may be asked.
- No help from outside: if the umpires believe the players have had input from anyone off the field, such as signals from the dressing room, they can decline the review.
- No big-screen replays may be shown until the 15 seconds have passed.
- Once requested, a review can't be withdrawn.
