After a field goal, or a penalty stroke awarded in field play, is scored, the attacking team can try for an additional goal through a conversion. It is a one-on-one shoot-out in which the player who scored takes on a defending goalkeeper or player, at the same end where the goal was scored.
- Players and umpires must be ready within 40 seconds of the goal being scored.
- If the attacker is not ready and is penalised, the conversion is forfeited. If the defender is penalised, the conversion is upgraded to a penalty stroke.
- The shoot-out clock runs for 8 seconds.
- A successful conversion adds one additional goal for the attacking team.
- A goal from a penalty corner counts as a field goal if the ball has travelled more than 5 metres from the circle.
