Under the Boxing Regulations (regulation 17 as amended in 2005, and regulation 19):
- Boxing SA sanctions every title bout and keeps ratings lists. The official (mandatory) challenger is the No. 1 rated boxer; if they decline, the next highest-rated takes their place.
- A champion must defend against the official challenger within three months of being called on, and may also make voluntary defences against any rated boxer with Boxing SA's approval (fight within 90 days of approval).
- If a champion can't or won't defend in time, Boxing SA may order a defence or declare the title vacant.
- A champion loses the title by losing a title fight at that weight, failing to make weight, refusing to defend, misconduct, possibly a criminal conviction, or losing their licence.
- A champion who wins a recognised world title has their SA title vacated; an SA champion's provincial title is vacated. Nobody may hold two SA or provincial titles in different weights at once.
- A draw in a title defence means the champion keeps the title. In a fight for a vacant title, each judge must pick a winner.
- Title distances: SA title 12 × 3 min (men) or 10 × 2 min (women); provincial title 10 × 3 min (men) or 8 × 2 min (women).
