Under regulation 34 of the Boxing Regulations, three judges sitting on three sides of the ring each score every round independently:
- The boxer who performed better in the round gets 10 points; the other gets a proportionately lower score. An even round is 10-10.
- No half points.
- Points are awarded for attack: clean, direct punches with the knuckle part of the closed glove to the front or sides of the head or body above the belt, plus effective aggression; and for defence: guarding, slipping, ducking, blocking, evading and countering. Defence may not count for more than attack.
- Punches to the arms, outside the target area or not landed with the knuckles score nothing.
- The referee can order points deductions for fouls.
At the end, each judge totals their card, and the majority of the three judges decides the winner.
