Can I challenge a risk category or another decision made under SASREA?
Rule- South Africa
- SASREA

- SAPS
- Event safety

- All ages
- 2010
- Event organisers
Yes, in two ways.
Ask for reconsideration of a risk category (s6(11)-(12))
- Send the National Commissioner (SAPS) additional written information and ask for the categorisation to be reconsidered.
- If the National Commissioner refuses to change it, they must give you written reasons.
Appeal to the SASREA Appeal Board (s36, s42)
- You can appeal a decision about a risk categorisation or its amendment, a safety certificate (stadium, venue, design, alteration or high-risk event), a prohibition notice or a spectator exclusion notice.
- Lodge a written appeal within 14 days of the decision, with a written statement to the chairperson setting out your grounds.
- The decision stands until the appeal is decided, so plan on that basis.
- The Board can confirm the decision, or set it aside and replace it with its own decision. It must decide promptly so the purpose of the appeal is not defeated by delay.
The Appeal Board is independent, has at least seven members appointed by the Minister of Sport on the advice of the National Assembly, and is administered by the national Department of Sport (s26, s38).
