Guidance Note 02 (Playing Pitches) recommends:
| Level | Pitch type and number | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Cricket Blast game | Synthetic or mown area of outfield: 1 | A single oval may have multiple games at once |
| Junior Stage 1 | Synthetic: 1 | One pitch per playing field |
| Junior Stage 2 | Synthetic: 1 | One pitch per playing field |
| Junior Stage 3 | Synthetic or turf: 1 | One pitch per playing field |
| Open age, club home or club satellite | Synthetic: 1 | Meets weekly Country, Metropolitan and/or Junior Association fixtures; turf management and the cost of preparation are likely to limit the number of pitches |
| Premier | Turf: 6 to 10 or 4 to 6 | Depends on whether the venue also hosts State, Regional, Country, Metropolitan or Junior Association representative matches |
For the number of turf pitches at a site, Cricket Australia recommends seeking advice from your State or Territory Cricket Association. Practice pitches are covered separately in Guidance Note 03.
Dual turf and synthetic. A dual arrangement lets a ground used for afternoon turf competition also host junior matches in the morning and on weekday evenings. It works best where pitch management is strong and communication between the curator, clubs and other users is healthy, and where pitch preparation or wet weather (covers staying on) does not heavily limit use of the synthetic pitch.
