Under Rule 29.5, to make up the 55.0 kg minimum a coxswain may carry deadweight in a sealed bag. The bag must be placed in the boat as close as possible to the coxswain's person.
- Not counted: no article of racing equipment is considered part of the deadweight.
- Checks: the Control Commission may require the weight of the deadweight to be checked at any time before the race or until immediately after disembarkation, and the Starter and Umpire may check that it is present (Rule 30.3).
- Lightweight races: the same provisions apply to coxswains in lightweight races (Rule 29.6).
