| Sanction | How it's shown | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Warning, stage 1 | No card: verbal or hand communication through the game captain | Not recorded |
| Warning, stage 2 | Yellow card in one hand | No point. Signals the team has reached the sanctioning level for the rest of the match. One yellow card per team per match |
| Penalty | Red card in one hand | Point to the opponent |
| Expulsion | Red and yellow together in one hand | No point. Out for the rest of the set: a player stays seated on the bench; other team members leave the playing, bench and warm-up area |
| Disqualification | Red and yellow in separate hands | No point. Out for the rest of the match: must leave the playing, bench, warm-up and spectator areas |
- Misconduct and delay sanctions carry through the whole match (expulsion is only for the set).
- When a player on court is sanctioned, they go to the referee stand to acknowledge it. For a bench sanction or a delay sanction, the game captain goes to the stand for the explanation.
- A protest about a judgment decision may draw a red card for the coach.
