UKHSA's first-aid steps for heat exhaustion:
- Move them somewhere cool, and encourage them to drink cool water.
- Cool them down quickly: sponge or spray them with cool water and put cold packs around the neck and armpits, or wrap them in a cool, wet sheet and use a fan.
- Get advice from NHS 111 if you are concerned or symptoms get worse.
If you suspect heatstroke (for example confusion, a seizure or loss of consciousness), call 999 first and keep cooling them while you wait.
UKHSA notes that signs of heat stress get worse with physical activity and, if untreated, can progress to heat exhaustion or heatstroke.
