The IFAB Laws of the Game 2026/27 take effect from 1 July 2026. A competition that started before that date may bring the changes in early or delay them until no later than the start of its next competition, so a league that began in February 2026 may only apply them from its next season.
Main changes for coaches:
- Substitutions: once the referee signals or the board is shown, the player coming off must leave within 10 seconds. If not, the substitute can't enter until the first stoppage after one minute of play.
- Injuries: an outfield player who causes play to stop for an injury, or is treated on the pitch, must stay off for one minute after the restart. Exceptions include goalkeeper injuries, collisions needing attention, severe injuries, and injuries from a foul that earned a yellow or red card.
- Throw-ins and goal kicks: if a team deliberately delays one, the referee starts a visible five-second countdown. If the ball isn't in play in time, a throw-in goes to the opponents, and a goal kick becomes a corner to the opponents.
- Accessories (formerly "jewellery") are allowed if not dangerous and safely and securely covered.
- No yellow card for denying an obvious goal-scoring opportunity if advantage is played and a goal is scored.
